Dr Bheki Masango
Chairperson · Elected 11 October 2026
Leadership grounded in service. A journey defined by resilience. A vision focused on uplifting others.
Every organisation is shaped by the quality of its leadership. Strong leaders understand where an institution comes from, recognise the opportunities before it and have the courage to guide it towards a better future. At the helm of the Cuban Alumni Association of South Africa (CAASA) is Dr Bheki Masango—a medical professional, educator, author and leader whose life reflects the transformative power of education, perseverance and service.
His story is not simply one of academic achievement or professional advancement. It is a story of purpose: a commitment to learning, a willingness to serve and a determination to create opportunities for others. Through every stage of his journey, Dr Masango has demonstrated that leadership is built over time through discipline, resilience and a deep understanding of the needs of people and communities.
A Journey Shaped by Education
Dr Masango’s professional journey began in education. In 1994, he obtained his Diploma in Education cum laude from Indumiso College of Education. This early achievement established a foundation that would continue to influence his life: a belief that education is one of the most powerful tools for personal development, social progress and community transformation.
Although he began his career in education, his desire to serve humanity led him towards medicine. He pursued medical training in Cuba before completing his final year at the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA). This period was significant not only for his professional development, but also for his connection to the Cuban educational experience that continues to unite CAASA members today.
Studying medicine requires commitment, discipline and the ability to persevere through demanding circumstances. For Dr Masango, the experience also provided an opportunity to develop a broader understanding of healthcare, society and the responsibility that comes with serving others. His time as a student helped shape the values that would later define his professional and leadership journey.
Even during his student years, his peers recognised his ability to lead. He was entrusted with the responsibility of serving as Class Representative for the class of 2004. This role reflected the confidence others placed in him and offered an early indication of his ability to listen, communicate and represent the interests of those around him.
Service at the Heart of His Career
Following his medical training, Dr Masango began building a career rooted in public service. His professional contribution in Mpumalanga extended over more than a decade, during which he worked in public healthcare and took on increasing levels of responsibility.
He eventually rose to become Senior Medical Manager and Acting Chief Executive Officer of Piet Retief Hospital. These positions required more than clinical knowledge. They demanded strategic thinking, sound judgement, effective communication and the ability to lead within a complex healthcare environment.
Working in public healthcare provides a direct connection to the needs of communities. It requires professionals to balance limited resources, operational pressures and the expectations of patients, families and staff. Dr Masango’s experience in this environment strengthened his understanding of the importance of accountable leadership and efficient management.
Recognising that effective healthcare leadership requires both clinical expertise and sound administrative knowledge, he continued to expand his skills through studies in public finance and health management. This commitment to lifelong learning has remained a defining feature of his career.
For Dr Masango, professional development has never been about collecting qualifications for their own sake. It has been about becoming better equipped to serve, lead and contribute meaningfully. Each area of study has added another dimension to his ability to understand challenges, identify solutions and support the institutions and communities entrusted to his care.
Advancing Medical Science
His pursuit of excellence continued into the field of medical science. Dr Masango went on to obtain specialist qualifications in medical microbiology and a Fellowship in Clinical Microbiology.
Medical microbiology plays a vital role in modern healthcare. It supports the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases and contributes to the development of safer, more effective patient care. Through this field, Dr Masango has continued to make a meaningful contribution to diagnostic excellence and medical knowledge.
Today, through his work at PathCare Laboratories and his scientific publications, he remains actively involved in advancing healthcare. His work reflects the importance of accuracy, innovation and continuous research in improving outcomes for patients.
His professional journey demonstrates the value of combining service with expertise. Whether working in public healthcare, laboratory medicine, education or organisational leadership, Dr Masango has consistently pursued opportunities to make a positive difference.
Resilience Beyond the Résumé
Behind the qualifications, appointments and professional achievements is a deeply personal story of resilience. In his 2025 memoir, The Purple Struggle, Dr Masango reflects on the challenges, experiences and determination that have shaped his life.
The memoir offers an important reminder that leadership is not created by titles alone. It is formed through the experiences that test us, the obstacles that require us to adapt and the moments that deepen our understanding of other people.
Personal challenges can either limit a person or become a source of strength. Dr Masango’s journey illustrates how perseverance can transform difficulty into wisdom and how lived experience can strengthen one’s ability to lead with empathy.
His story is particularly relevant to the CAASA community. Many Cuban-trained graduates have travelled demanding paths, overcome barriers and built careers in service to their communities. Their achievements are connected not only by academic training, but also by the resilience required to succeed in changing and often challenging environments.
Dr Masango’s life reminds us that success is not always a straight line. It is often the result of continuing to move forward, even when the path is uncertain.
A Chairperson with a Vision for CAASA
As Chairperson of CAASA, Dr Masango brings together a wealth of professional experience, a strong appreciation for lifelong learning and a clear understanding of the value of collective progress.
His vision is to see CAASA become a stronger, more connected and more influential home for Cuban-trained graduates in South Africa. This vision is grounded in the belief that the association has an important role to play in strengthening relationships, supporting members and ensuring that the contribution of Cuban-trained professionals is recognised and celebrated.
At the heart of this vision is a simple but powerful principle:
Our shared history should become the foundation for our shared future.
CAASA is more than an association of professionals who studied in the same country. It is a community united by a distinctive educational journey, a shared professional purpose and a commitment to making a meaningful contribution to society.
The Cuban educational experience has left a lasting mark on the lives and careers of many South African professionals. It has created connections that extend beyond classrooms and campuses. These connections are reflected in shared values, professional relationships, friendships and a common understanding of the responsibility that comes with serving communities.
CAASA provides an opportunity to preserve and strengthen these connections. It can serve as a platform for professional engagement, mentorship, collaboration, knowledge-sharing and collective advocacy. It can also help ensure that future generations understand the significance of the journey that came before them.
From Individual Achievement to Collective Impact
Dr Masango’s leadership calls on members to look beyond individual accomplishments and recognise the strength that lies in unity.
Every member of CAASA has a unique professional story. Members work across different sectors, disciplines and regions, bringing diverse skills and experiences to the association. When these individual strengths are connected, they create the potential for a much greater collective impact.
An active association depends on active members. This means participating in programmes, attending meetings, sharing ideas, supporting initiatives and creating opportunities for collaboration. It also means being willing to listen, contribute constructively and work towards common objectives.
Leadership within CAASA is therefore not limited to the Executive Committee. Every member has a role to play in shaping the association’s future. The success of the organisation will depend on the willingness of members to take ownership of its vision and contribute to its growth.
Dr Masango’s message is an invitation to participate. It is a call to build an association that reflects the professionalism, resilience, excellence and spirit of service embodied by its members.
Looking Ahead: Building Together
As CAASA continues to strengthen its foundation, the task before the association is to turn collective potential into meaningful progress.
This requires active membership, collaboration, constructive engagement and a shared commitment to the association’s objectives. It requires members to identify opportunities, respond to challenges and support initiatives that benefit both the organisation and the wider community.
The future of CAASA will be shaped by the relationships it builds and the value it creates. A strong association can connect professionals across generations, support emerging leaders, promote knowledge exchange and create platforms for members to contribute to national development.
It can also preserve the history of Cuban-trained graduates in South Africa while ensuring that this history remains relevant to the future. The experiences of past generations can guide and inspire those who are beginning their own professional journeys.
Dr Masango’s leadership provides an important foundation for this work. His career demonstrates the value of combining knowledge with service, ambition with humility and professional excellence with social responsibility.
His journey also reminds us that true leadership is not measured solely by qualifications earned, positions held or milestones achieved. It is measured by the lives we touch, the opportunities we create and the legacy we leave behind.
A Legacy of Service
The story of Dr Bheki Masango is ultimately a story of service. From education to medicine, from public healthcare to medical science, and from professional leadership to organisational development, his work has been guided by a desire to contribute.
His leadership of CAASA comes at an important time. Associations such as CAASA have the potential to strengthen professional networks, preserve shared heritage and create new opportunities for collaboration. Realising this potential will require vision, commitment and the active involvement of members.
As Chairperson, Dr Masango brings a perspective shaped by experience. He understands the importance of education, the demands of professional service and the value of institutions that bring people together. He also understands that progress is achieved through collective effort.
His vision challenges CAASA members to ask important questions: How can we support one another more effectively? How can we create opportunities for younger professionals? How can we use our collective expertise to serve society? How can we ensure that our shared history continues to inspire future generations?
These questions are not only for the Executive Committee. They belong to every member of the association.
The Road Ahead
The future of CAASA will be built through action. It will be shaped by members who are willing to participate, collaborate and contribute. It will be strengthened by a culture of openness, professionalism and mutual support.
Dr Masango’s journey offers a powerful example of what can be achieved when education is combined with determination and service. It shows that leadership is not a destination, but a continuous responsibility.
As CAASA moves forward, the message is clear:
Our greatest strength lies not only in where we have come from, but in what we can achieve together.
The association’s shared history is a source of pride. Its professional diversity is a source of strength. Its members are its greatest resource. By working together, CAASA can become an even stronger platform for connection, development and service.
Dr Masango’s leadership invites every member to become part of that journey. It is an invitation to celebrate the past, engage with the present and help shape the future.
